Abstract: this article gives a panoramic vision of the life and work of the venezuelan thinker julio césar salas, outlining his sociological, anthropologic and historical analysis of venezuelan and continental reality. liberalism impregnates his political and economical proposals, and led him to be a vigorous opponent of juan vicente gomezs government. being a freethinker, positivist, and militant evolutionist, as follower of the ideas of auguste comte and herbert spencer, he was excommunicated from the catholic church. this made of salas a critical thinker in the face of politics, economy, society and history and all venezuelan and latin-american reality of his time.
