Abstract:

the work we present is based on the aims of the academic counseling program which refers to the need to strive for academic excellence through the optimization of student performance, and the need to seek answers to problems associated with factors that may influence student performance in subjects of a quantitative nature, such as statistics and mathematics. as a result, this study is of an exploratory nature which aims to identify the factors related to university pedagogic practice which could be associated with the poor performance rates registered in three faculties and four schools at the universidad central de venezuela. the study takes in the perspective both of the students and teachers. information was collected through two questionnaires validated by experts. one was completed by 789 students and the other by 42 professors at the schools selected. results show, on the one hand, the complexity of the problem of student performance in the course subjects analyzed, since performance is linked to curricula, administrative, socio-cultural, and didactic aspects; and, on the other hand, the need to promote training and updating programs that would lead to greater ties between subject-oriented degrees and teacher training. suggestions are made regarding possible guidelines that would create such training courses for university teaching staff in the subject areas studied.
