Abstract: one specimen of the annulate anthaspidellid demosponge, archaeoscyphia pulchra (bassler) has been found in the paleontological collection of the j. c. moyano museum, in mendoza city, argentina. this is the first identification of this species from the invertebrate collection. the sponge was identified on the bedding plane of a fossiliferous wackestone of the san juan formation (oepikodus evae zone), in the cerro negro, huaco area, central precordillera of san juan province, western argentina. the ordovician sponge is a small flanged-appearing annulate, obconical sponge of 56 mm in height with the typical architecture of radial endroclones and canal system of the family anthaspidellidae (order lithistida). this is the first report of the genus for this precordilleran locality.
