Abstract: believing that they were living through an eschatological war between good and evil, or the gospel and romanism, missionary trumbull and the english-speaking reformed community of valparaíso in the 1870s articulated a complex yet coherent vision by means of their journal the record. the gospel was truth, efficacious for the transformation of individuals and societies. establishing the means and ends of their task, the community identified with liberal elements of chilean society, and fostered their efforts towards modernity and progress, offering the progressive social elements they understood were innate to protestantism as their contribution to chile’s future.
