This article attempts to reflect on the role of custom and tradition according to British Conservative political theorists. The main problem is whether (or how much) these values are independent and how much they depend on certain ideas and contents of the political order. Four different approaches to the value and function of tradition and custom are particularized here: 3 positive and 1 negative. Conservative thinkers whose conceptions are reflected in the article: John Fortescue, Richard Hooker, Edmund Burke, Thomas Carlyle and Gilbert Keith Chesterton.
