Abstract:

NDT-Bobath therapy, which is based on neurophysiological development idea, appears to be one of the most significant and most frequently used methods in rehabilitation of children with infantile cerebral palsy (ICP). However, the therapy does not always provide equally positive results in terms of improving motor functions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of selected clinical factors, degree of motor disability (according to the criteria of Kurdjavcev) and time in which the rehabilitation started, on effectiveness of NDT-Bobath therapy. The research group consisted of 45 patients aged 1-4 with spastic types of CP. Before the NDT-Bobath therapy, each patient was tested by means of the standardized table of psychosomatic and kinetic evaluation by Micha owicz-Mro ek. Next, every 6 months, for the period of three years, the tests were repeated. It was observed that the positive results of NDT-Bobath therapy decreased with the severity of CP. The best improvement of motor functions was obtained in children with hemiplegia and the worst in children with tetraplegia. The degree of disability of children with CP was important as well. It was proved that patients with mild and moderate impairment of their self-dependence achieved much better improvement of motor functions than others. A statistically significant difference was observed in rehabilitation results among children who had been introduced to the NDT-Bobath therapy early - up to the age of 3 months - and those who had begun their rehabilitation later in life - at the age of 9 months. Positive results of NDT-Bobath method in rehabilitation of motor functions most of all depend on the clinical form of the disease and the degree of disability.
