Abstract:

This paper presents the results of the research on the total number of bacteria (TBN), number of heterotrophic bacteria (CFU), bacterial production (BP) and taxonomic variety of neustonic and planktonic bacteria inhabiting two coastal lakes; a estuarine Lake Gardno and nonestuarine Lake Do gie Wielkie. In both studied lakes TBN and CFU were much greater in the surface layer than in the susbsurface water. In nonestuarine lake the rate of secondary production of bacterioneuston was higher than that of bacterioplankton. Conversely, in the estuarine lake the level of production of planktonic bacteria was higher than of neustonic bacteria. All studied bacteriological parameters displayed a distinct seasonal variability. The taxonomic composition of bacterioneuston and bacterioplankton inhabiting both studied lakes was dominated by bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family. In Lake Gardno bacteria of the Aeromonas - Vibrio group and in Lake Do gie Wielkie bacteria of Flavobacterium - Cytophaga group were also numerous.
