O presente artigo apresenta uma reflex o sobre o papel social do elemento material na obra, a o e pensamento do artista alem o Joseph Beuys (1921-1986). A partir da década de 1970, Beuys passou a direcionar mais seu trabalho para atividades educativas e políticas. O artista desejava ampliar os limites da arte a partir do Conceito ampliado de arte e da Teoria da Escultura, divulgados durante a década de 1960. Gradualmente, o elemento material, antes restrito às esculturas, desenhos e a es, passa a atuar socialmente. Assim, por meio da descri o e análise de cinco trabalhos de Beuys, produzidos entre 1970 e 1980, buscarei mostrar como este elemento material expande-se pouco a pouco dentro de seus próprios significados, para, ao final da vida artística de Beuys, agir como agente social. This article presents a reflection on the social role of the material element in the work, thought and action by the German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986). From the 1970s, Beuys began to shift more of his work for educational activities and policies. The artist wanted to expand the boundaries of art from the Expanded concept of art and Theory of Sculpture published during the 60's. Gradually, the material element, previously limited to sculptures, drawings and actions, starts to act socially. Thus, through description and analysis of five works of Beuys produced between 1970 and 1980, I seek to show how this material element expands little by little within its own meanings to, at the end of Beuys' artistic life, act as social agent .
