This essay looks at the path of theatres in natural environments within the more general context of experimentation in contemporary theatre. The hendiadys ‘city and country’ is assumed, in the first part,to question how they place themselves in the complex dynamics of the local and the global. The second part focuses on those devices that underpine their aesthetics: their strategies for expanding the perception of the living, beyond the human, sweep from the narrative level, to the mise-en-scène, to the level of corporeal presence.
