Borges: de la traducción a la ironía = Borges: From translation to irony

Este artículo contribuye a dilucidar algunas de las citas encubiertas y alusiones incluidas en Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote que multiplican el efecto irónico del texto. Entender la traducción como ironía recuerda, una vez más, las definiciones clásicas de lo literario que forman el sistema literario de Borges. Las traducciones forman parte de las vicisitudes de un texto. Son borradores paradójicamente posteriores a un original dudoso, siempre provisional. Pierre Menard no es una metáfora de la traducción, como suele decirse. La traducción es, en realidad, una metáfora de lo literario. La metáfora por excelencia de lo literario. Como máscara o como revelación, la traducción está integrada con solidez a ese devenir que vive cortejando su fin. This article contributes to elucidate some of the covert quotations and allusions to be found in “Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote” which multiply the ironic effect of the text. Translation seen as irony once more evokes the classic definitions of literature which shape Borges’ literary system. Translations are part of the vicissitudes of a text. They are, paradoxically, the later drafts of a doubtful - and always provisional - original. Contrary to the commonly voiced assumption, Pierre Menard is not a metaphor of translation. In fact, translation is a metaphor of the literary phenomenon: the metaphor par excellence of the literary phenomenon. Be it mask or revelation, translation is inseparable from that process by which the literary work lives and courts its own end.
