La tradición clásica en la prosa científica de Chile y Argentina. Plinio y las ballenas en la obra del abate Molina = The classical tradition in the scientific prose of Chile and Argentina. Pliny and the whales in the work of Abbot Molina

Este artículo pretende ofrecer una visión general de los estudios dedicados en Argentina y Chile al género literario llamado historia natural . Con el auge de la conciencia nacional, algunos autores americanos y europeos, impulsados por un deseo de expansión comercial y conocimiento científico, empezaron a describir la fauna de los territorios americanos. En ese empe o, recurrieron a la literatura clásica y, sobre todo, a la Naturalis historia de Plinio. Uno de los autores más influyentes en esta reformulación de métodos y figuras clásicas fue el abate Molina, cuyo Compendio de la Historia Geográfica, Natural y Civil del Reyno de Chile sigue de cerca el modelo estilístico de Plinio. This paper aims to offer a general view of the studies devoted in Argentina and Chile to the literary genre called Natural History. With the emerging awareness of nationhood, a number of American and European authors, prompted by a desire for commercial expansion and scientific knowledge, began to describe the wildlife of the American territories. In undertaking this task they made use of classical literature, specially Pliny's Naturalis Historia. One of the most influential authors in this reworking of classical methods and figures was Abbot Molina, whose work Compendio de la Historia Geográfica, Natural y Civil del Reyno de Chile is closely modelled on Pliny's style.
