La traducción de América = The translation of America

Este artículo analiza la política lingüística del imperio espa ol en América. Se describen la desidia educativa que determinó el masivo analfabetismo del final del período colonial, la conservación de las lenguas amerindias para los usos religiosos y la creación de una sociedad letrada que definió de una vez para siempre la supremacía del castellano como vehículo de la alta cultura. Este proceso produjo la aniquilación cultural de las civilizaciones indígenas porque no solamente se quemaron los códices y otros documentos precolombinos, sino que también se ocultaron y prohibieron las precoces y brillantes traducciones que contenían la historia de los pueblos originarios de América. The present article analyses the linguistic policy of the Spanish empire in America. It describes the neglect of education which resulted in massive illiteracy at the end of the colonial period, the continued use of Amerindian languages for religious purposes and the creation of a literate society which determined once and for all the supremacy of Spanish as the vehicle for high culture. This process brought about the cultural annihilation of the indigenous civilizations because not only were the codices and other pre-Colombian documents burned, but also the brilliant early translations containing the history of the original peoples of America were suppressed and banned.
