Recepción del concepto de autopoiesis en las ciencias sociales The Reception of the Concept of Autopoiesis in the Social Sciences

Se discute la presencia de la noción de autopoiesis, desarrollada por el biólogo Humberto Maturana y colaboradores, en las ciencias sociales. La indagación aborda la adopción de un concepto referido estrictamente a un fenómeno biológico y su difusión desde un país periférico -Chile- al plano de las teorías sociales universalistas. La presentación se organiza en tres partes: la primera da cuenta de la emergencia de la teoría de la autopoiesis, y tiene por propósito indicar el contexto y condiciones que favorecieron su aceptación en las ciencias sociales, particularmente en la aplicación que realiza Niklas Luhmann; seguidamente se presentan los resultados de un análisis aplicado a bases de datos de publicaciones científicas recientes y que permiten especificar la generalización del concepto; finalmente, desarrollamos algunas hipótesis para explicar este caso excepcional de difusión del pensamiento científico latinoamericano en la teoría social. The authors discuss the presence of the notion of autopoiesis, developed by biologist Humberto Maturana and his colleagues, in the social sciences. The study looks at the adoption of a concept that referred strictly to a biological phenomenon and its dissemination from a peripheral country (Chile) to the plane of universalist social theories. The presentation is organized in three parts: the first deals with the emergence of the theory of autopoiesis and aims to pinpoint the context and conditions that favored its being accepted in the social sciences, particularly in Niklas Luhmann's application; the second part presents the results of an analysis applied to the data bases of recent scientific publications that make it possible to specify the generalization of the concept; and finally, the authors develop certain hypotheses to explain this exceptional case of the dissemination of Latin American scientific thought in social theory.
