РАДИКАЛНИОТ ИСЛАМ: РЕАЛНА ЗАКАНА ЗА БЕЗБЕДНОСТА НА БАЛКАНОТKeywords: Security threats , radical Islam , terrorism , extreme nationalism , the Balkans Abstract: Numerous security problems and threats in the modern world are, oneway or another, related to the Islam fundamentalism i.e. its doctrine and politics. The reason is not to be found in the Islam itself as (allegedly) religion that promotes conflicts and violence. The explanation lies rather in the fact that the majority fundamentalist movements, from Hezbollah and Hamas in the Middle East to Bin Laden and his followers in Afghanistan and elsewheren the world, as well as Abu Saif’s group in the South of Philippini, act on the basis of the belief that their “way” can be realized only through violence. Moreover, 9 out of 10 most active terrorist organizations have Islamist background, which is enough to classify this fundamentalism as one of the major security threats in the world. The Islam arrived in the Balkans with the spread of the Ottoman Empire, but the radical Islam is a novelty that coincided with the dissolution of ex-Yugoslavia, or more precisely during the Bosnian war, directlyfrom the Arap states. In the period of 1992-1995 there was an influx of the holy warriors (mujahedins), who later got involved also in the conflicts in Kosovo and Macedonia. Their activities represent real security threat for the states in the Balkans.
