Abstract:

Objective: The aim of this study is evaluation of in vitro sensitivity and resistance rate of 293 enterococcal strains isolated from the urine samples of patients with a history suggestive of urinary tract infection in our hospital. Methods: Identification was performed by conventional methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disk diffusion method in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Results: Resistance rates of enterococcal strains to penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, levofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin were found to be 85.4% (135/158), 35.2% (92/261), 69.6% (155/223), 28.4% (35/123), 28.6% (36/126), 53.1% (110/207), respectively. A high level resistance rate was found against aminoglycosides, namely 51.2% (139/271) for gentamicin (120 mg) and 60.6% (89/147) for streptomycin (300 mg). Conclusions: Although no enterococcal strain with glycopeptide resistance was isolated, special attention should be paid to high-level aminoglycoside resistance in treating enterococcal infections.
