En la cuenca alta del río Botanamo, en la Reserva Forestal Imataca (municipio Sifontes, estado Bolívar) donde conviven comunidades criollas e indígenas que utilizan productos forestales no maderables (PFNM), como parte de sus recursos de subsistencia, se caracterizaron aquellos provenientes de especies arbóreas. Se realizaron entrevistas personales en 310 hogares, usando un cuestionario semi-estructurado. Los usos determinados fueron los siguientes: medicinal (35%), alimento (32%), fibra y artesanía (13%), forraje (11%), colorante (7%) y ornamentales (2%); cerca de 75% de la población muestreada satisface sus necesidades básicas utilizando productos del bosque. Es notorio que 76% de las especies arbóreas utilizadas como PFNM son nativas de los bosques de la localidad, lo cual refleja alto grado de conocimiento y uso de éstos por parte de las comunidades criollas del sector. In the upper basin of the Botanamo river, at Imataca Forest Reserve (County Sifontes, Bolívar State) native and indigenous communities live together using non timber forest products (NTFP) as means of subsistence. Personal interviews were conducted in 310 households, using a semi-structured questionnaire to characterize the NTFP tree species. The specific uses were: medicine (35%), food (32%), fiber and handicrafts (13%), fodder (11%), colorant (7%) and ornamental (2%); near of 75% of the sampled population meets their basic needs using forest products. It is noteworthy that 76% of tree species used as NTFPs are native to local forests, reflecting a high degree of knowledge and use of natural forest by the native communities living in the sector.
