Anxiety Disorder in Hypertensive Patients

Objective: Presence of anxiety disorders in hypertensive individuals, treatment affects the response seriously and causes increase in the number of drugs used. In study frequency of anxiety disorders was examined.Methods: 52 primary hypertensive patients followed by Gulhane Military Medical Akademi (GATA) Internal Medicine Polyclinic were included. In study, Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was applied and blood pressures were measured in polyclinic (measured by physician in sitting position) and house measures were recorded. Comorbid diseases and drugs used by patients were asked, all datas were transferred to database. Statistical data as mean ± standard deviation for continuous variables, percentages are given for categorical data.Results: 63.46% (n=33) of patients were female and 36.54% (n=19) male. Mean age was 57.33±15.88 (20-91). The mean systolic blood pressure was detected 137.50±18.79 (110-180) mmHg, while diastolic blood pressure was 79.38±7.71 (60-90) mmHg in polyclinics. When BAI scores were examined, the average score was found as 14.61 ± 8.80 (3-36) and 25% (n=13) of patients had minimal anxiety, 36.5% (n=19) mild, 25% (n=13) moderate and 13.5% (n=7) severe anxiety. There wasn’t a statistically significant difference between BAI scores and blood pressure values at target (p>0.05).Conclusion: Both hypertension and anxiety disorder, are worldwide. However, it’s associated with hypertensive subjects is not the acceptable level. Therefore, the treatment of hypertension with anxiety disorders is more difficult than normal subjects. Development of hypertensive subjects with anxiety disorder response to treatment decreases. It’s essential to evaluate anxiety disorders in hypertensive patients in family medicine centers.
