An Extensive Survey of the Phytochemistry and Therapeutic Potency of Ocimum sanctum (Queen of Herbs)

Ocimum sanctum, known as Queen of Herbs, is an important member of the family Lamiaceae due to its use in herbal medicationcenturies back, especially, in India and other parts of the sub-continent. It is still a subject of immense importance in modernmedical research and it is due to the chemical constituents present in it like flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, saponins, vitamins,minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and many others. It has shown a wide range of therapeutic potencies like antimicrobial,anticataleptic, antitoxic, immunomodulatory, analgesic, antidiabetic and cardioprotective activities. The aim of the present reviewis to present an extensive survey on the phytochemistry and pharmacological applications of the herb.
