Histogram Equalization with Range Offset for Brightness Preserved Image Enhancement

Abstract:

In this paper, a simple modification to Global Histogram Equalization (GHE), a well known digitalimage enhancement method, has been proposed. This proposed method known as HistogramEqualization with Range Offset (HERO) is divided into two stages. In its first stage, an intensitymapping function is constructed by using the cumulative density function of the input image,similar to GHE. Then, during the second stage, an offset for the intensity mapping function will bedetermined to maintain the mean brightness of the image, which is a crucial criterion for digitalimage enhancement in consumer electronic products. Comparison with some of the currenthistogram equalization based enhancement methods shows that HERO successfully preservesthe mean brightness and give good enhancement to the image.
