Abstract:

Before studying legal translation, most translation students are not familiar with law or legal terminology even in their own language and culture. Moreover, they feel both an enormousrespect and a bit of fear concerning the subject. For this reason, in their first contact with legal translation, it would be useful to use texts that both build their confidence and also peak their curiosity. Then, when these initial psychological barriers are broken, the students will have the confidenceto activate the necessary attitudes to do legal translation such as accuracy, patience, etc.In this paper, we present four kinds of exercises on legal terminology which deal with different problems in an unusual way. Firstly, we will see a series of quotations and jokes about legal terminology. These quotations allow us to present this terminology in a textual context comfortable for the students. Secondly, we propose an exercise on one of the most frequent errors made by students of legal translation: the incorrect identification of legal terminology. Thirdly, we propose an exercise to work on polysemy in legal translation. Finally, we suggest an exercise to practice the written comprehension of legal texts and to see the importance of term definitions. The conclusion of the paper is that using curious and unusual resources to teach legal terminology is a useful tool to motivate the students and improve their learning.
