Social Movements and Media: The Representation of “Occupy Wall Street” Movement in the MediaKeywords: Social movements , news media , protest demonstrations , representation , critical discourse Abstract: In this study, the representation of the “Occupy Wall Street” in main stream and alternative media has been examined in Turkey. The construction of dominant meanings concerning the “Occupy Wall Street”movement in alternative and main stream news media have been discussed in order to show the approach of the media in the face of social movements which have become an important tool of the citizen participation. In this context, the priorities and preferences of media on “Occupy Wall Street” movement, the forms of actions narrative and the construction of dominant meanings have been researched and the production of these meanings have been tried to analysed through Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis methodology.
