CORRELATION BETWEEN CELLULOSIC PULP CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PAPER OPTICAL AND PHYSICAL MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

Abstract:

The knowledge about chemical characteristics of pulp is important in the process of papermaking. This study aimed to correlate the chemical characteristics of pulp with the optical and physical-mechanical properties of paper. The determination of optical properties and physical-mechanical paper were made by the TAPPI (1992) norms. The carbohydrate composition of the bleached pulps was adapted from the Tappi T 249 cm-85 procedure and hexenuronic acids were determined by the Vuorinen (1996) method. The content of xylan showed an r= -0.3411 for the tensile index; r= 0.3307 for the tear index; r= 0.5587 resistance to air flow and r= 0.4504 for opacity. The content of glycans showed r= 0.2534 for the tensile index; r= -0.3950 for the tear index; r= -0.078 and for resistance to air flow and r= 0.5870 for opacity. The hexenuronic acids showed r= -0.2517 for the tensile index; r= -0.2433 for the tear index; r= 0.2028 for the resistance to air flow and r= -0.7245 for opacity The comparison among the samples showed none significance with the F test. This indicates that the chemical characteristics of the pulp do not influence the optical properties and physical and mechanical properties of paper. Este trabalho teve como objetivo correlacionar as caracter -sticas qu -micas da polpa celul 3sica com as 3pticas e f -sico-mec ¢nicas do papel. Foram determinadas as propriedades 3pticas e f -sico-mec ¢nicas do papel, a composi § £o polissacar -dica das polpas branqueadas e os cidos hexenur ′nicos. O teor de xilanas mostrou r= -0,3411 para o -ndice de tra § £o; r= 0,3307 para o rasgo; r= 0,5587 para a resist ancia passagem de ar e r= 0,4504 para a opacidade. O teor de glicanas mostrou r= 0,2534 para o -ndice de tra § £o; r= -0,3950 para o -ndice de rasgo; r= -0,078 para a resist ancia passagem de ar e r = 0,5870 para a opacidade. Os cidos hexenur ′nicos mostraram r= -0,2517 para o -ndice de tra § £o; r= -0,2433 para o de rasgo; r= 0,2028 para a resist ancia passagem de ar e r= -0,7245 para a opacidade. As compara § μes amostradas n £o foram significativas. Sendo assim, o estudo aponta para o fato de que as caracter -sticas qu -micas da polpa celul 3sica n £o influenciam nas propriedades 3pticas e f -sico-mec ¢nicas do papel.
