La etnografía como método integrativo Etnography as an integrative method

Introducción: La etnografía se entiende desde tres perspectivas: enfoque, método y texto. En el campo de la salud, se puede usar no solo desde el punto de vista del proceso de investigación, sino también desde el mismo momento de la consulta médica, el diagnóstico y el tratamiento. El paciente valora que sea escuchado y entendido como un sujeto que tiene una historia y que está envuelto en una cultura que se relaciona con su estado y las respuestas a lo que le sucede. Metodología: Análisis de la literatura concerniente a la etnografía, observación participante y relación de la investigación cualitativa y la salud. Resultados: Existe diversidad en las opiniones y posturas acerca de la etnografía, de su validez y utilidad, así como también en la consideración del método y las técnicas que lo nutren. La etnografía es un método integrativo que se puede nutrir de múltiples herramientas para la recolección, análisis e interpretación de datos. Lo anterior hace que sea una opción para la evaluación del individuo por parte del profesional de la medicina. Conclusiones: La etnografía brinda la oportunidad de acercarse a la realidad de un individuo o de un grupo de individuos con el objetivo de obtener información acerca de la pregunta bajo investigación, así como su comprensión e interpretación. Introduction: Ethnography is understood from three perspectives: approach, methodology and text. In the health field, ethnography can be used not only from the standpoint of the research process, but also from the very instances of medical consultation, diagnose and treatment. The pacient appreciates the fact of being heard and understood as a subject who has her/his own story and is involved in a particular culture related to her/his own status and to the effects a caused by life experiences. Methods: Analysis of the literature related to ethnography, participanting observation and an relationship between health and qualitative research. Results: There is a diversity of opinions and attitudes about ethnography, its validity and usefulness as well as in considerations related to its method and the techniques that nourish it. Ethnography is an integrative approach that may resorty to multiple tools for collecting, analyzingand interpretingthe data. Therefore, ethnography constitutes an option for the physician when performing individual assessment. Conclusions: Ethnography provides an opportunity to approach the reality of an individual or group of individuals in order to obtain information about the matter under investigation, its understanding and interpretation.
