Abstract:

Cryosurgery can be defined as an freezing-induced tissue in order to cause a safe and controlled tissue necrosis. Its mechanism consists of a rapid heat transfer, followed by tissue damage, which promotes inflammation and necrosis of the involved tissue. It is interesting to note that the cryotherapy agent has a different effect on each type of tissue. Cryosurgery has been used in several benign and pre-malignant oral lesions. For the treatment of these injuries, different application methods have been used, such as spray, swabs and needles, all following the same pattern of tissue action. Pain, swelling and persistent bleeding have been complications related to cryosurgery treatment, but all at low intensity. Today, in various areas of health cryosurgery is seen as a brief, safe and relatively inexpensive therapy.
