Bone Mineral Density Assessment Methods and Dentistry Application

Introduction: Bone quality and quantity evaluation had been the aim of some researches, mainly on diagnosis and prevention of bone metabolic diseases. Different methods to assess Bone Mineral Density (BMD) were developed in the last decades with the aim to determine the mineral contain on bone tissue without to precise bone quality. The bone quality evaluation had been carry out an important tool on planning, prognostic and treatment success in dentistry, since the advent of the implants and osteogenic distraction therapy. Objective: In this paper we will do a literature review about the different methods of BMD assessment and to evaluate the outstand of bone density determination on planning and treatment success on Dentistry specific therapy. Conclusion: There are different methods to determine BMD in Dentistry and the computed tomography seems to be the method of choice.
