This article examines the transformation of South American independence movements under the leadership of Simon Bolivar from a local movement to a national independence movement. After the French invasion of Spain in 1808, Spain one after the other lost its American colonies that were established in the 16th century. Once the Spanish king temporarily lost his throne during the French invasion, Spain’s ties with its American colonies were weakened. South American nations took this opportunity to launch their independence movements in the first quarter of the 19th century.
