Study of in vitro anti-cancer effect of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. ethanol extractKeywords: Scutellaria baicalensis , cancer cell growth , adhesion and invasion Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi on Madin-Darby Canine Kidney cells (MDCK) and primary liver cancer cells (PCC) in vitro. Ethanol extracts (70%) of S. baicalensis Georgi were prepared from herbs. Skullcap was prepared from the root of S. baicalensis Georgi (widely used as a dietary supplement in China). Both extracts dose-dependently reduced the number of MDCK and PCC cells which were cultured for 72 h. Compared to the control, 200 μg/ml of S. baicalensis Georgi extract in the medium reduced the cell number 2-3 fold. Moreover, 500 μg/ml of extract in the medium inhibited the cell proliferation by 91%. Rhizome and herb extracts (100μg/ml) in the medium reduced the proliferation of PCC cells by 64.6% and 25% respectively. МDCK cells’ division was inhibited by 100 μg/ml rhizome and as well as herb extract by 77% and 36% respectively. The herb extracts showed inhibitory effect on the division, growth, invasion, and adhesion of studied cancer cells
