Para além das paredes: a constru o da Catedral de Maringá = Beyond the walls: the construction of the Maringá Cathedral

Este artigo prop e uma análise sociológica acerca da história e constru o da Catedral de Maringá. Ela é um símbolo do poder da Igreja Católica, mas, sua constru o n o está dissociada das estratégias políticas e dos interesses locais. Este texto pretendeanalisar a Catedral de Maringá em três aspectos fundamentais: na combina o entre valores e ideário institucional católico com a modernidade, visível na própria arquitetura; na relevancia do projeto de constru o para os interesses locais; e no seu papel para trajetória de Dom Jaime Luiz Coelho, o principal articulador da obra. A análise de documentos e eventos, relacionados à constru o do prédio, revelam uma série de rela es e articula es que contribuem para a compreens o do significado da Catedral, n o só para a Igreja, como também, para a cidade de Maringá. This article proposes a sociological analysis of the history and construction of the Maringá Cathedral. It is a symbol of the power of the Catholic Church, but its construction is not unrelated to political strategies and local interests. This paper intends to analyze the cathedral in three aspects: the combination of Catholic values and institutional ideals and modernity, visible in the architecture itself; the relevance of the construction project forlocal interests; and its role in the trajectory of Dom Jaime Luiz Coelho, the main articulator of the work. The analysis of documents and events related to the construction of the building shows a series of relationships and discussions that contribute to the understandingof the meaning of the cathedral, not only for the Church, but also for the city of Maringá.
