La última palabra de Bergman: Sarabande

Unlike other great filmmakers that are prone to certain slackness when they become elderly, Ingmar Bergmandevised his swan song in such a lucid and perceptive way and showing such a creative capacity that he provided us with a work filled with tragic beauty that no doubt deserves to be considered one of the best works bythe Swedish filmmaker. It is the objective of the present paper to study Saraband as a specific text in itself and,at the same time, as Bergman's definitive work, because of the way he deals with the essential topics makingup his universe. We are faced with a "synthesis-film" that brings together the essentials of Bergman's prolificcareer. The drama between parents and children and the lament on the loss of the beloved woman form thetwo axes along which such a thematic universe -life, death, love, hate, suffering- takes shapes as tragedy andpassion
