Abstract:

The mind which is guiding the person about worldly matters as a natural faculty is insufficient to understand the divine truths and sometimes it can be a tangle or obstacle. Therefore the Sufis do not refused the mind altogether but they only categorized and identified the boundaries of the mind. They devoted the mind into two main categories as particular- universal (juz’i- kulli) and they think that particular mind is insufficient in their fields. In addition they have accepted the means of realization as discovery (kashf) and inspiration (ilham) which are more superior than mind according to their ideas. In this paper, some Sufis’ opinions about why mind is an obstacle to reach the divine truths are reviewed. In this article first of all the meaning of the mind in the dictionary indicates “obstacle” is examined. Then we are focused on a belief that Sufism does not give importance to mind is true or not. Shortly, it is discussed that Sufism as a discipline is superior than mind and it is not irrational.
