Ferrara is a city where the urban structure is still almost contained within the perimeter of Renaissance walls; the Certosa cemetery is apparently configured as an enclosure within the larger urban perimeter. The dominant theme that characterized Certosa’s transformation plans from monastery to cemetery was the definition of its boundary facing the city: the new arrangement of the ancient building was principally carried out by Ferdinando Canonici (1786-1873). Starting from 1819 he worked out several projects based on the relationship between the cemetery and the city; this relation will be achieved through the placing of a large meadow, a boundary garden, in front of the complex. A Ferrara, città in cui la forma urbana è ancora quasi contenuta all’interno del perimetro delle mura rinascimentali, il cimitero della Certosa si configura apparentemente come un recinto all’interno di quello più ampio della città. Il tema dominante che caratterizzò i progetti del cimitero della Certosa fu la definizione del proprio limite verso la città: la sistemazione dell’antica costruzione fu seguita principalmente da Ferdinando Canonici (1786-1873) che dal 1819 studierà diversi progetti curandone principalmente il rapporto con la città e definendo anziché un recinto murario un limite costituito da un grande prato, quasi un giardino, antistante al complesso. Questo luogo è diventato oggi un’intera parte di città, una grande architettura che nella sua uniformità si fa scena fissa del paesaggio-teatro urbano ferrarese.
