Abstract:

The present study explores official documents approaches concerning the teaching of Portuguese in Brazil (such as PCNEM, OCEM and PNLEM). More specifically, it aims to delineate the reader profile which is presently sought to develop during the secondary school years of Brazilian basic schooling. In that regard, the present paper also intends to provide curricula elaboration authorities, classroom-active teachers, and language scholars, means of understanding current propositions to the teaching of reading. Throughout the paper, based on assumptions of Applied Linguistics, concepts such as language, text and literacy are discussed, as well as different theoretical and methodological conceptions of reading. This study concluded that the set of documents analyzed lead, generally, to the development of a “critic reader” although they do not always prioritize linguistic phenomena and concurring pedagogical strategies.
