Il designer di prodotto si occupa, a livello teorico ed operativo, della progettazione tecnica ed estetica di prodotti in serie, cioè realizzati attraverso una produzione industriale. In particolare, la sua formazione si riferisce agli strumenti e alle tecniche relativi alla rappresentazione formale e funzionale del prodotto (dal disegno manuale al disegno tecnico, dalla fotografia alla produzione di modelli tridimensionali), ai linguaggi visivi, ai meccanismi percettivi ed ai sistemi cromatici. L’introduzione delle tecnologie informatiche ha portato ad un “ritorno” al modello, analogico e digitale, enfatizzando il ruolo delle discipline della rappresentazione come strumenti di indagine, verifica e scoperta trattando il disegno come “scienza sperimentale”. Il disegno, andando al di là della natura fisica o virtuale del medium, rimane ancora un atto creativo che figura il pensiero e anticipa la realtà costruttiva e i suoi effetti complessivi. The product designer is involved with both cultural and operational issues, addressing the technical and aesthetic design of mass-produced products, concerning an industrial production process. In particular, its background refers to the tools and techniques relating to the representation of form and function of the product (from freehand to technical drawing, from photography to three-dimensional modeling), to visual languages, to mechanisms of perception and to color design too. The introduction of computer graphics has led to a “return” to modeling, both analogic and digital, emphasizing the role of representation as tool of investigation, verification and discovery. Drawing for product design, acts like an “experimental science” and, going beyond the physical or virtual medium, it is still a creative process that shapes design and visual thinking and forecasts the reality of construction and its overall effects.
