Abstract:

Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is an effective treatment modality for patients with respiratory failure, chronic hypocsemia and/or hypercapnia, due to chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), thoracic rib cage and neuromuscular diseases. This treatment modality improves patients’ dyspne scores, vital parameters, arterial blood gases, in addition to significantly decreasing the rates of intubation, nosocomial pneumonia and related mortality. Average Volume-Assured Pressure Support, (AVAPS) has been developed to ensure a more consistent tidal volüme (Vt) while delivering pressure support ventilation. We aim to present our two hypercapnic respiratory failure patient treated with the recently developed AVAPS mode, due to the promising results according to literature.
