Abstract:

The study was undertaken to analyse the objective and subjective outcome of Retrograde Russel Taylor intramedullary interlock nailing in 15 fresh diaphyseal fractures of humerus at Department oforthopaedics, Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni from May 2006-Aug2008. Mainly as a result of roadside accidents, these fractures had a distinct male predominance (74%). Oblique fractures (AO Type A2) were most common (47%). Open reduction was done in 2 cases. The average union period was 12 weeks. Shoulder abduction greater than140 degree was obtained in 13 cases (87%). There were no cases of non-union or infection in the series. The common complication observed during the study was Iatrogenic posterior cortex comminution in 3 cases (20%). Using the criteria of Stewart and Hundley, results were excellent in 80%, good in 6.6%, fair in 6.6%, and poor in 6.6% cases. It is concluded that Retrograde intramedullary interlock nailing is better, reliable & superior method in the management of diaphyseal fractures of humerus
