Abstract:

Diversity as a ”good” thing. The fabrication of diversity in educational policy and practice. This article deals with educational policy and the fabrication of social and cultural diversity in schooling as a”good thing”. In recent years policies and practices have adapted to including multiculturalism in response to concerns regarding ethnic and linguistic diversity. Here, the main focus is not on the discrepancy or dissonance between policy and practice, but rather on the discrepancy between policy and the implementation of an intercultural pedagogy that deals with diversity and difference in a non-critical manner. It is argued that affirmationof social and cultural diversity is inadequate without the recognition of how differences (of class, language, and ethnicity) are socially constructed and closely tied to norms regarding “Swedishness”.
