Husbands, ou de l’utilité de la figure dans la construction du genre

Cette analyse du film Husbands (1972) de John Cassavetes s’appuie sur les travaux de Nicole Brenez et Jacques Aumont, une démarche inhabituelle pour explorer la construction du masculin dans la figure que constituent les maris. L’article met ainsi en perspective la succession de photos de famille qui ouvrent le film et la dérive filmée des trois protagonistes dans l’espace et dans le temps pour explorer les termes de la critique du masculin. Examinant la représentation de cette dérive qui n’est jamais récit et le processus de création qui permet généralement de donner du sens au film, l’analyse soulève ainsi certaines ambigüités troublantes concernant l’échec du masculin et l’absence de déconstruction des normes sexuées, genrées et sexuelles à l’oeuvre. This analysis draws on a conceptual framework based on Nicole Brenez’s and Jacques Aumont’s work around the ‘figure’ to explore masculinity in Husbands (1972) by John Cassavetes. More specifically, this unorthodox approach of the figure is used to analyse the group of male protagonists in the film. The article focuses on both the opening series of family snapshots and the subsequent drift of the three men in space and time to explore the elements in terms of a critique of masculinity. Examining not only the representation of a drift that never really becomes a story but also the creation process generally deployed in the interpretation of this particular film, the analysis raises questions concerning the troubling ambiguities between the failure of masculinity that is being represented and the lack of any deconstruction work concerning the norms of gender and sexuality put into play.
