Perhaps this work is about the obvious. To find elements of Augustinian thought in the gospel is not original. However, when trying to get away from the classic definition of the tradition of philosophical thought that locates Augustine between Plato and Descartes, we operate through an analysis that tries to rescue the importance of a shift – in the early days of Christianity – which is a cornerstone in what we call as the Western world: if we understand that there is a significant rupture between the Old and New Testaments we would take a task that is perhaps to draw a parallel to the west important tradition: starting with the Doctrine of The Path, passing Paul until the master of the West Augustine and, perhaps, ending in Luther – the Augustinian monk who needs no introduction. For now, however, it is worth mentioning that there is no intent to commit an absurd mistake, or to deny the undeniable: the declared influence of Neoplatonism – mainly via Plotinus – in Augustine can be proven once we get in touch with his work. However, as we contemplate some points present in the Gospel to try to understand the meaning of interiority in Augustine, we start from the assumption that the detachment operated by Christianity was essential for such a feat.
