Screening of Methanolic Extract of Eugenia Jambolana Leaves for its Hepatoprotective Activity in Carbon Tetrachloride Induced RatsKeywords: Eugenia jambolana leaves , Hepatoprotective , CCL4 , Serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase , Serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase Abstract: Summary. Methanolic extract of Eugenia jambolana leaves was investigated for their Hepatoprotective potentials against liver injury induced by CCl4 in rats. The liver damage was induced in male albino rats (200 – 220 g) by administering CCl4 (1ml/kg) for 7 days and the extent of damage was studied by assessing the biochemical parameters such as total bilirubin, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total protein (TP), albumin and globulin. Histopathological changes of liver sample were compared with respective control. The oral treatment of rats with methanolic extract of Eugenia jambolana at the dose 200 mg/kg for 7 days resulted in significant hepatoprotection for total protein (6.6 g/dl) only, while at 400 mg/kg, the restoration was significant for enzyme markers, viz. SGOT, SGPT, ALP (22.5 U/L, 18.5 U/L, 58.5 U/L ) in CCl4-treated rats. The maximum tolerated dose of the extract was found to be greater than 3000 mg/kg, p.o. Thus from the present study it was concluded that methanolic extracts of Eugenia jambolana leaves is having hepatoprotective effect against CCl4 induced liver injury. Industrial relevance. The present study affords evidence on hepatoprotection by Eugenia jambolana leaves against carbon tetrachloride, a toxic air contaminant responsible for hepatic and renal toxicity. This is a preliminary study and this will support us in isolating the biological active phyto-constituents for treating hepatic disorders. The outcome of this study will help in discovering a new or active phytochemicals and thus create a novel hepatoprotective moiety with less adverse effect for the betterment of the human society.
