Abstract:

Background: Too many antibiotics and overloading the patients with antibiotic which slowly and steadily increasing number of mutant and drug resistant micro-organism. This is a worldwide phenomena and in our study we are auditing the daily dosing and duration of antibiotics for various dental problems in central India. Aim: To assess the therapeutic and prophylactic prescription of antibiotics in dental practice.Method: In the current study 300 dentist practicing in central India were included. A modified pretested questionnaire was mailed to them to collect the data pertaining to the therapeutic and prophylactic prescription of antibiotics in dental practice. Results: The results showed that the antibiotics most predominantly prescribed for was penicillin derivatives 221(78 percent), followed by erythromycin 29(10.2 percent); Cephalosporins 17(6 percent);Metronidazole 80(28.3 percent); tetracycline 17 (6.0 percent).Respondents prescribed antibiotics for an average of 4.4 days, ranging from 3 to 6 days. The majority of respondents 226(80 percent) prescribed antibiotics for 5 days. Amoxicillin was the antibiotic of choice among respondents; it was prescribed by 260 (92 percent) of respondents.
