Assessment of availability and knowledge about the use of Noninvasive Ventilation (NIV) in Intensive Care Units (ICU) in Jequié-Ba

Abstract:

To evaluate the use of Noninvasive Ventilation (NIV), the availability of equipment and level of fitness and update on NIV among doctors, nurses and physiotherapists in intensive care units (ICU) of public and private hospitals in the city of Jequié. Methods: The sample consisted of 17 doctors, 10 nurses and 9 physiotherapists graduated for at least 6 months and who worked in the ICU General Hospital Prado Valadares-HGPV (public) or St. Helena Hospital (private). Results: The hospitals had resources available for the NIV, and the predominant use of invasive ventilation equipment adapted to NIV 69.4%; NIV specific devices accounted to 5.6%, 2.8% were related to flow-generating devices and more than one type of equipment accounted for 22.2%. All doctors and physiotherapists interviewed indicated the use of NIV, while only 20% of the nurses indicated, but the physiotherapists were the ones who felt more able to install it. The physiotherapists were also better prepared for indications and contraindications, and updates on the proposed theme. Conclusion: There is a satisfactory availability of devices NIV in the ICU of the Municipality of Jequié, in which doctors, nurses and physiotherapists can install and monitor the same, and the physiotherapists had superior performance related to the handling of this equipment.
