On a tiré sur Togliatti ! La difficile interprétation de l’attentat du 14 juillet 1948

Le 14 juillet 1948, à la nouvelle de l’attentat contre Palmiro Togliatti, le secrétaire général du Parti communiste italien, se déclenche de manière spontanée une grève générale illimitée tandis que l’Italie se couvre de barricades. Le calme ne revient que le 16 juillet, alors que de l’autre c té des Alpes, le cycliste Gino Bartali s’apprête à remporter le Tour de France. Dès lors débute un autre combat, historiographique celui-là, autour de l’interprétation de cet événement exceptionnel. à gauche, le débat porte sur la question de savoir s’il s’agissait d’une authentique tentative insurrectionnelle ou bien d’une explosion de colère et d’indignation sans perspective politique précise. Du c té catholique s’élabore en contrepoint le mythe des vertus pacificatrices d’une victoire sportive, capable de détourner la masse des Italiens des sirènes démagogiques d’un Parti communiste présenté ainsi comme un corps étranger à la société italienne. July 14th, 1948, the news of the attempt against Palmiro Togliatti, the General Secretary of the Italian communist Party, start a spontaneous and unlimited general strike whereas Italy covers itself with barricades. The peace returns only on July 16th, while on the other side of the Alps, the cyclist Gino Bartali is going to win the Tour de France. From then on, another fight, historiographical, begins, around the interpretation of this exceptional event. On the left, the debate is about how much it was an authentic insurrectionary attempt or an outburst of anger and indignation without precise political prospect. On the catholic side, in counterpoint, it’s the myth of the pacificatory virtues of a sports victory, capable of diverting the mass of the Italians from the demagogic sirens of a communist party presented so as a foreign body to the Italian society.
