Evaluation of Lipid Profile of North Indian Hypertensive Subjects

Abstract:

Hypertensionis a major health problem in developed as well as in developing countries. Itis one of the most important public health challenges worldwide because of itshigh frequency and concomitant risks of cardiovascular and kidney disease. The purpose of this study was to comparethe blood lipid levels in hypertensive subjects with normotensive subjects bymaking the association of hypertension with lipid profile in hypertensivecases. This prospective study was carried out in general medicine and pathologydepartments of Govt. Hospital in Rishikesh. In the present study, the volunteers wereselected from General Medicine department of Government hospital Rishikesh fromMay 2009 to May 2010. Hypertension was defined as per the recommendations ofJNC7th Report. After 12hours fast the blood samples were collected from all individuals withoutanticoagulant and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 5 minutes. The serum wascollected in fresh vial and standard methods were followed for biochemicalstudies. A total of 120 volunteers were recruited for this study. Out of them70 were hypertensive subjects (38 males and 32 females) and 50 werenormotensive subjects (27 males and 23 females). The results concluded that totalcholesterol, LDL- C, VLDL-C and triglycerides were higher and statisticallysignificant in hypertensive subjects than normotensive subjects (p<0.05).The mean HDL-C in hypertensive subjects was lower than normotensive subjectsand statistically significant (p< 0.05)
