Les polémiques sur le risque individuel, le geste technique en trop, l’ornement technique malheureux qui peut tout gacher, ont bien souvent pour effet d’enfermer le football dans un schéma simpliste du point de vue de l’articulation de l’individuel et du collectif comme de l’action en général. Est-on forcément condamné à osciller au football entre l’individuel et le collectif ? Si le football semble imprégné de virtuosité, un problème se pose dès lors qu’il faut l’attribuer et l’isoler dans des actions souvent cafouilleuses. Sur la base d’actions techniques accomplies par de fameux dribbleurs, cet article montre que la circulation du ballon sur un terrain n’est ni explicable par la seule virtuosité technique d’un individu, ni simplement le résultat de la somme des actions individuelles, et encore moins uniquement le produit d’un plan tactique. En se dépla ant, le ballon se charge et se décharge d’effets au gré des relations entre les joueurs présents sur le terrain.
