Abstract:

Pre-service Turkish Teachers’ Adequacies of Selecting Children’s Literature ProductsStatement of the Problem:Children’s literature products are the first tools to direct pupils to perceive the fine points of the language that begins with visual and auditory possibilities it offers as early as in preschools. For this reason they should be based on some principles such as expression, content, messages, graphical elements, design etc. It is possible to produce quality children’s books only by obeying these principles. Existence of such a precondition may result in existence of childish and directing and desire-to-read suppressing books despite the existence of quality books that would contribute to children’s cognitive, affective and social improvements. Therefore, determination of pre-service Turkish Language teachers’ selection proficiencies of quality children’s books and the level of awareness of the adequacies for selecting them become important. Aim of the Study:The study, which was conducted to determine whether per-service Turkish language teachers have learned the principles that should be present in children’s literature products and whether they have developed awareness about educational qualities of children’s literature products, mainly aims at determining pre-service Turkish language teachers’ adequacies of selection of children’s literature products. Method of the Study:In this qualitative study conducted using focus group interview method, group of senior level university students of Turkish Language Education Department, Necatibey Faculty of Education at Balikesir University was selected as the sample. Using maximum variety sampling method, three students from each of four classes selected according to their Children’s Literature course grades into three success level groups: high, intermediate and low, to make a total of 12 students. As the data collection instrument an interview form was used; using this form the students were interviewed in two sessions and their responses were recorded via a voice recorder. Qualitative data obtained by transcribing the interviewees’ The results of the study was constructed based on pre-service teachers views reflecting their knowledge about the characteristics of a quality children’s book and about their perceptions of proficiencies of selecting quality children’s books.In the style related characteristics of quality children’s books, it was come up to the result that participant per-service teachers did not mention about the visual objects’ contributions to children’s aesthetical development and artist
