Naturalismo, ficción y objetos matemáticos

Resumen: En reacción al platonismo de Quine acerca de los objetos matemáticos han surgido las posiciones ficcionalistas, tanto las revisionistas como las hermenéuticas. En mi parecer las tres posiciones son defendibles. Cuál elige uno (si es que decidimos elegir una de ellas), depende de convicciones filosóficas muy fundamentales que conciernen a nuestra posición con respecto al naturalismo. En este artículo intento identificar las particularidades de cada una de ellas. Analizo con especial atención a la ficcionalista hermenéutica por ser la más novedosa y propongo que esta posición es afín a —y me parece más sólida en— el marco de una concepción pluralista de la realidad como la de William James. Abstract: Quine’s platonism regarding mathematical objects has been countered by fictionalist interpretations of mathematical discourse. Some of these interpretations are revisionist, while others are hermeneutic. In this essay I argue that all three of the philosophical positions mentioned are tenable, as the choice between them comes down to very fundamental philosophical intuitions concerning naturalism. To show this, I closely examine these positions, paying special attention the hermeneutic fictionalism, in account of it being the most novel of the three. I also suggest that this position is compatible with —and can become stronger if it is inserted in— a pluralistic conception of reality like the one advocated by William James.
