Effect Of Naringenin On Carbohydrate Metabolism In Streptozotocin- Nicotinamide Induced Diabetic RatsKeywords: Naringenin , Nicotinamide , Antihyperglycemic , Glycosylated Haemoglobin. Abstract: Recently there has been a growing interest in antihyperglycemic agents from natural products, especially those derived from plants, because plant sources are usually considered to be less toxic, with fewer side effects than synthetic sources. Many traditional remedies for diabetes mellitus use plant sources, and over 200 pure phytochemicals are currently known to have hypoglycemic properties. Several bioflavonoids, ubiquitously present in plants, and common components of human diets have been reported to improve hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus by affecting glucose transport, insulin-like properties, and insulin-receptor function. The present study was carried out to evaluate the “Effect of Naringenin on carbohydrate metabolic enzymes in streptozotocin-Nicotinamide induced diabetic rats”. In order to confirm, the antidiabetic effect of Naringenin, the following aspects were studied: Changes in the levels of blood glucose, plasma insulin, glycosylated haemoglobin and urine sugar. Changes in the activities of carbohydrate metabolic enzymes such as hexokinase, gluclose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase in liver.
