URBAN LIVELIHOOD: URBAN AGRICULTURE IMPLICATION IN FOOD SECURITY, A CASE STUDY OF IBADAN METROPOLIS

Abstract:

Urban farming is lifting hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty and improving nutrition and health standards around the world. The study assessed the effect of urban agriculture in the urban livelihood and food security in Ibadan metropolis. Specifically, the study examined the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the farmers and their land accessibility. The respondents were selected through multistage stratified random sampling from five local government areas of the city. Using descriptive and Logit regression model to analyze collected data, it was discovered that majority of the respondents are female (54.28%), married (84.29%) and above 40 years of age (57.14%), with household size of 1-3 (78.57%). High percentage of the head of households had formal education (92.72%) and had the necessary skill in farming (80%). Access to land is poor. The marital status and farm income of farmers are the significant factors affecting/influence involvement of farmers in urban agriculture. It was recommended that access of urban farmers to farm land should be increased, to lift up the productive capacities and increase food security.
