A Comparative Study of the Journal Assessments for Library and Information Science in Taiwan

In this study, questionnaire survey and bibliometric method wereused respectively to assess the library and information science (LIS)journals in Taiwan. The researchers also conducted secondary analysison the results of three previous LIS journal assessment projects, whichhad employed expert assessment, citation analysis, format review, orcombinations of these methods. Statistical tests of the results from thefive assessments showed inconsistency. Journal rankings based onexpert assessment showed consistency among and within each of thefive assessments. Rankings based on citation analysis or format reviewwere consistent to other rankings within each assessment, but wereinconsistent between assessments. Statistical tests also revealed thatthe reasonable settings of weights in different assessment projects hadno significant influence on rankings. In conclusion, expert assessmentis currently the method yielding most consistent results in existing LISjournal assessments in Taiwan.
