Abstract:

Introduction:Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection with variable prevalence in different countries. Some studies have suggested its role in abortion. The aim of this study was to determine the role of anti-toxoplasma antibody in recurrent spontaneous abortion.Material and Methods:A case-control study was conducted on 120 pregnant women with unexplained recurrent abortion (case group) and 50 pregnant women with normal delivery (control group). The sera from of the cases and the controls were tested for anti-toxoplasma IgG antibody by ELISA. Results:The present study revealed a higher prevalence of anti-toxoplasma IgG antibody in women with repeated abortions (17.5%) compared with the control group (14%); however, the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.7).Conclusion:The results showed that, in spite of the confirmed role of toxoplasma gondii in fetal abortion, there was no significant difference between the case and control groups in anti-toxoplasma antibody; thus, the issue that whether toxoplasma infection can cause recurrent abortion is controversial. In order to determine the relationship between toxoplasma infection and abortion a cohort study with larger sample size is recommended.
